CAPF Global Pathology Development Grant 

In an effort to improve global health and the science and expansion of pathology and pathology services, the Global Pathology Development Grant from the College of American Pathologists Foundation offers funding, up to $10,000.00 USD, to support impactful, sustainable, and accretive global (international) projects that develop, expand, and sustain,  the  delivery of pathology services through education/training, patient care, laboratory quality, or enhanced technology and laboratory diagnostics. 

The award is intended to provide funding  to support organizations and individuals who are working with limited budgets and have active programs promoting pathology services in under resourced areas across the globe.

Applications will be reviewed upon merit and alignment of the project goals with the intent of the award.  Focus areas may include innovative community health, public education, or service initiatives such as:

  • Programs supporting the provision of technical guidance and support for labs regarding selection of lab tests, lab supplies and equipment.
  • Helping laboratory sites with development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), budgets, evaluating current capacity and expansion plans.
  • Technical expansion – upgrading pathology technologies to meet quality and international standards.
  • Systems strengthening – systems to appropriately operate and maintain the laboratory, initiatives such as the 
    • Stepwise Laboratory Improvement Process Towards Accreditation (SLMTA) program
  • Local Capacity Building – continued education of pathologists, residents, and laboratory staff to build local pathology capacity.
  • Innovative programs supporting the practice of anatomic and/or clinical pathology including the expansion of services
  • Exploratory meetings and forums conducive to networking with professionals on international pathology or laboratory quality issues.

ELIGIBILITY:

  • Global Pathology/Healthcare Organizations – preference to 501c3 organizations in the U.S. or charitable, non-profit organizations outside the U.S.
  • Pathologists actively engaged in providing the science and expansion of pathology and pathology services in under resourced areas across the globe.
  • CAP Fellow or CAP International Fellow membership is preferred but not required
  • Currently serving CAP Foundation Board or Committee members, CAP Board members, or candidates for elected CAP or CAP Foundation office are not eligible to serve as the principal investigator for this award.

Applicants unable to meet any of these components are not eligible to apply for funding. 

APPLY BY:  June 17, 2025

APPLICATION SUBMISSION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING:

  1. Application Form
  2. A project proposal, to include:
    • Project title
    • Project executive summary (one page)
    • Detailed project narrative delineating goals and how they support building, sustaining and expanding the delivery of pathology services and its impact on patient care (max 3,000 words)
    • Detailed budget (exclusions include funding for personal travel and  indirect expenses)
    • Confirmation that the project maybe be completed in one to two years
  3. A letter from the sponsoring institution (e.g., identifying where the investigator practices and governmental or nongovernmental organization)  granting permission to pursue the project, if an award is bestowed.   
  4. Curriculum vitae (also include the CVs for your team members) (Limit to 5 pages, biographical sketch format acceptable)
  5. Photo (preference for a photo featuring your face or face & shoulders; 1+ megabyte; color; with or without lab coat; neutral background; the photo you submit to be used in web and print media for award recognition; no selfies please)

Applications for funding are due by June 17, 2025 at 5 p.m. Central Time

EXPECTATIONS IF SELECTED:

Activation of the grant is planned to occur as early as six to eight weeks after application submission (subject to receipt of required assurances). 

Grant recipients are required to prepare a series of reports:

  • An interim report is due six (6) months after project initiation.
  • Annual reports up to two years are required.  The final report (after a maximum of 24 months) is due and must be comprehensive, outlining accomplishments toward the award aims.  A final report in a manuscript format suitable for submission to the ARCHIVES OF PATHOLOGY & LABORATORY MEDICINE is  required.  If the Archives editors reject the paper, the author is free to submit to other journals.

OTHER INFORMATION:

All grant reviewers are required to complete and submit a conflict-of-interest form in addition to disclosing any actual, potential, or perceived conflicts-of-interest that may exist during the review process.

Note: The CAP Foundation reserves the right to NOT confer a grant or award in any given year.
